Thermal paste or pad for processors

Thermal materials such as thermal paste or a thermal pad are relevant for gaming PCs as well as for office computers. This is because the processors of the PCs all produce waste heat that must be dissipated by a elaborate cooling system. In order to dissipate the thermal energy as efficiently as possible, a heat-conducting CPU thermal paste is applied between the hardware component and the cooler. The paste serves as a connection between the metal surfaces, smoothest out unevenness and thus improves conductivity.

Application of the thermal paste

When applying the paste, it should be noted that even a small amount, usually a small drop, is sufficient. As already mentioned, the thermal compound serves to establish optimal contact between the heat sink and the hardware component. The paste can differ in quality, durability and applicability. Depending on the quality grade of the heat-conducting agent, the paste conducts differently well. Pastes with a high metal content have a high thermal conductivity. For long-term functionality of your PC, you cannot avoid buying thermal conductive paste.

Thermal pads are available in two variants: the solid and the liquid variant. The solid thermal pads are self-adhesive and easy to apply. The consistency of the pad is particularly soft in order to compensate for unevenness and to ensure ideal heat dissipation as an optimal connection between the CPU and the heat sink. The heat conduction pad can be individually cut to size for different areas of application and is therefore particularly adaptable. The liquid variant of the thermal pads consists of an initially solid, thin metal plate. This is placed between the CPU surface and the heat sink after cleaning. If the processor heats up to 58 degrees Celsius, the thin metal plate liquefies. The resulting liquid contributes to an optimal connection between the heat sink and the CPU. It should be noted here that, depending on the composition of the thermal pad, increased electrical conductivity can lead to restrictions in use. Not all thermal pads are the same.

Application of the thermal glue

  • The thermal glue is a two-component heat-conducting agent that bonds two components together and, like a thermal paste, creates an optimised surface connection. This conductive agent is shipped in two components and is only mixed shortly before application, as otherwise the glue would already harden in the tube. The glue layer is applied to the heat source in as thin a film as possible and smoothed out with a spatula. This gives you a firm hold and heat conductivity for optimal PC cooling!

What is the difference between thermal glue and thermal paste?

There are two main differences between a thermal glue and a thermal paste.

  • As the name suggests, it is difficult to separate parts once they have been glued together. This is easier when using thermal paste. If a later separation is to be guaranteed, then it is better to buy heat-conducting paste.
  • The thermal conductivity is higher with the thermal paste than when using the adhesive.

It is important to note that not all of the conductive materials mentioned are suitable for application to aluminium surfaces. In addition, cheaper products in particular are electrically conductive due to their high metallic content. Contact of conductive heat conductors with electrical conductors should be avoided. Particularly high-quality products convince with high thermal conductivity without static charge and electrical conductivity. The reason for this is the composition of the PC heat-conducting agent without metallic ingredients.
